What is a SIM?

How does dual SIM work?
Dual eSIM phones allow you to have two active phone numbers on the one device. This can be done using a mix of a physical SIM and an eSIM, or on newer devices, two eSIMs at the same time.
Each SIM has its own phone number and can be connected to a different mobile plan or network. This means you can make and receive calls and texts from both numbers on the same phone, without needing to carry two devices.
You can manage your SIMs through your phone settings, where you can switch between them or turn one on or off. The exact steps may vary depending on your device, so it’s best to check with the manufacturer if you’re unsure.
Most dual SIM phones operate using something called Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS). This means both numbers are active and ready to use, but only one can be used at a time. For example, if you’re on a call using one number, you won’t be able to receive a call on the other until the first call ends.
What can I use dual SIM for?
Here are a couple ways you can use dual SIM phones:
- Use your work phone number and personal phone number on one device.
- While travelling overseas, use one local SIM and one international SIM.
- Assign one SIM for making voice calls and the other for browsing the internet.
